Proper care after performing Lammina treatment is important to increase the longevity of the restoration. In addition to regular visits for maintenance and hygiene, your patient should be made aware of the post-care instructions and consent to a new scan for fabrication of a SmileGuard protection splint.
After completing the finishing & polishing for the Lammina veneers, while the patient is still in the chair, you will want to take new photos, intraoral scans, and discuss the post-care instructions.
1. Post-Treatment Photos
Photos are important! Not only does it allow you to show your patient where they started and the improvements to their smile after Lammina, it offers legal protection by documenting the patient's clinical conditions before and after treatment.
This moment can be emotional and memorable for patients as they see the transformation... be sure to capture it! As a Lammina Beta Tester, we want to see the results you are achieving. Don't forget to take full face shots too and share them with us at Six Month Smiles (along with the patient consent form).
2. SmileGuard IO Scan
For fabrication of the SmileGuard protection splint, take new intraoral scans of the patient and submit the files to Six Month Smiles. The SmileGuard is made from 0.040 Essix material and is intended to protect the restorations from breakage or damage. If your patient has received orthodontic treatment, we can fabricate the splint to accommodate permanent lingual retainers.
Here is the process for ordering the SmileGuard:
Once you receive the SmileGuard shipment, call your patient to come in for a fitting. Ensure the tray fits snuggly and instruct the patient to insert and remove it a few times for practice. If there are any areas of discomfort, simply file these down or trim the trays. Ask the patient to wear the SmileGuard nightly and to request a replacement as needed.
3. Post-Care Instructions
It is important that your patient is aware of certain foods to avoid and expectations after treatment. They should try and avoid foods and beverages such as red wine, coffee, red fruits, curry, turmeric, and mustard that can stain teeth and affect the color of the veneers. Also, if your patient has habits such as biting on pencils, nails, ice, or other hard objects, discourage them from doing this as it can cause damage to the veneers. It is good practice to ask the patient to sign an acknowledgement form after discussing the post-care instructions.
If you do these 3 things after every Lammina case, in conjunction with regular visits for polishing and hygiene, you will increase the longevity and durability of the restoration for many years to come.
